Corrosion resistance of zirconium

Zirconium is a reactive metal with a strong affinity for oxygen.When zirconium is in the oxidizing medium, the surface will spontaneously form a very adhesive protective oxide film.

This oxide film has strong self-healing ability in the presence of oxygen and can protect zirconium matrix from corrosion at 300℃.Zirconium is therefore a corrosion – resistant metal.Its chemical stability is better than nickel base alloy, superior to advanced stainless steel, titanium and its alloys.

Zirconium is particularly outstanding an advantage is the corrosion resistance of reducing acid, that is to say in sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and other acids have very excellent corrosion resistance, which is just the lack of titanium in corrosion resistance.

Zirconium is very resistant to corrosion in most inorganic acids, organic acids, alkali solutions, salt solutions, and some molten salts.But in a few media, such as hydrofluoric acid, ferric chloride, copper chloride, concentrated sulfuric acid, wet chlorine gas is not resistant to corrosion.It is also resistant to high temperature and high pressure water, steam and liquid metals.

1. The corrosion rate of industrial pure zirconium in all boiling concentrations of hydrochloric acid is less than 0.025mm/a.

2. Zirconium has excellent corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid with a concentration of less than 70%.In addition, because stainless steel and nickel alloy can not be used in high temperature, 20% sulfuric acid and 40-60% of the boiling temperature of sulfuric acid range, zirconium in sulfuric acid environment has an irreplaceable role.

3.below 200℃, not more than 90% of nitric acid, zirconium has good corrosion resistance.
